The Effect of Self-Determination on Quality of Life for the People with Psychiatric Disabilities

Abstract
This study explored three issues in regard to the self-determination and quality of life for the people with psychiatric disabilities. The first purpose of this study was to examine whether self-determination had a positive impact on quality of life for the people with psychiatric disabilities. The second purpose of this study was to examine whether self-determination capacities and opportunities had a positive impact on quality of life for the people with psychiatric disabilities. Third, whether the interaction effect between the self-determination, family support and friend support on quality of life for the people with psychiatric disabilities were examined. The data were collected from 193 on the people with psychiatric disabilities participating in community mental health centers. The results of this study were as follows: Findings suggested that the self-determination had significantly positive impact on quality of life for the people with psychiatric disabilities. Also, the self-determination opportunities had significantly positive impact on quality of life for the people with psychiatric disabilities. Also, the family support and friend support among people with psychiatric disabilities buffered the impact of self-determination on the quality of life among people with psychiatric disabilities. According to the results, implications for research and practice were discussed.
